The End of Empathy

Thank you for writing this post. Some days it seems like half the people on the planet are missing their “sensitivity chip.” Last year when a close friend unexpectedly took his life, a couple of jerks wrote hateful things on his Facebook calling him a “loser” or “pathetic” for not “sucking up the shit life dished out.” My friend didn’t share the pain he was going through with anyone. He kept it bottled upside, and it drove him to the edge. And it makes sense. The people who made those comments on his FB page were life long friends. I believe my friend never expressed what he felt because he thought he wouldn’t be taken seriously. It kills me that people are either so self-absorbed or so full of hate they are unable to censor what comes out of their mouths or what they hastily type. But you know what? It has only made me more empathetic. And I am hoping it’s contagious.
