Join the ethical consumerism movement and win WWF gear!

The primary mission of the Green Stars Project is to encourage you, dear reader, to consider the ethical impact of your purchases. The best way to do this, and to have an impact on others at the same time, is to rate the product or business with a score for social and environmental impact. Reviews can be posted anywhere online, and I’m proposing a universal ethical rating scale of 1 to 5 Green Stars. The score can be stated anywhere in the text or title of the review.

What are Green Stars?

Overview: The Green Stars Project (GSP) is a simple idea for dealing with unethical corporate practices by impacting companies at their most sensitive point: their revenue. It allows every person with internet access to express their opinion regarding the social and environmental impacts of a product or service on any site that includes customer reviews. The existing ratings scales, usually in the form of gold stars, take into account the quality and price of a product or service. These gold star ratings, whether on retailers such as Amazon or review sites such as Yelp, greatly influence our purchasing decisions as consumers. The introduction of green star ratings will allow us to also take into account the other factors besides quality and price — the factors that determine the quality of life on this planet.

Competition: Write an ethical review

I’m running a competition to encourage you to do this. Two winners will receive a WWF gift (or a $55 donation to a charity of your choice, if you prefer). This is a win-win for you and the World Wildlife Fund.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Write a Green Stars review of any product or company.
  2. Post it anywhere online. For example,
  • For a review of a product, post it on any retail site.
  • For local businesses, post it on a review site such as Yelp, TripAdvisor, or Google Maps.
  • You could also post it on your blog, YouTube channel, etc., if you have one.
  • On social media (e.g., the Facebook page of the company you’re reviewing).

3. Let me know by posting a comment here or email me jmskrb at gmail.

If you need any help, I’m happy to assist!

I’ll announce winners on the Green Stars Project by the end of April.
