  • Two new publications show that the temporary works sector is current, relevant and continuing to innovate

OK this blog post is a little bit premature as we haven’t had the time to review the subject documents in detail. We’re referring to two new high-level temporary works publications, one by CIRIA and one from the Temporary Works Forum. These are:

  1. CIRIA C761 Tower crane foundation and tie design. CIRIA, London, 2018
  2. Precast concrete: Good practice and common issues in temporary works (Temporary Works Forum, February, 2019)

C761 is a long overdue revision of the seminal C654 which has served its purpose well. Industry was screaming for an update to account for Eurocode application and CE marking so C761 arrived not a second too soon. Cursory review of the new submission highlights the superior quality of it versus its predecessor. C654s four rudimentary design cases are given much more thorough structural and, in particular, geotechnical treatment. There are also some new design cases — design treatments of a cruciform base on unreinforced pads, steel grillage on a building core and plunge columns to a cruciform base are most welcome. We can also see reference to cyclic loading and discussions on second-order effects & eccentricity which are also most welcome. The emphasis on high quality and thorough design and inspection is no surprise given the authors who are industry giants.

Similarly, the TWF always produce good stuff. The best practice guidance is distilled from high-level practitioners. Really good focus is presented in Design intent and coordination and, like C761, CE marking is covered. We’re also pleased to see demolition (with treatment of prestressed and post-tensioned elements) being covered and, like all TWF guidance, the case studies are informative.

These documents are a good turn from a specialist niche of the construction & civil engineering sector which is very active and consistently improving and innovating.
