Imagine walking on a beach, close to the water’s edge with the cool and refreshing ocean breeze blowing your hair back. As you walk, you naturally leave footprints behind in the sand. A trail of where you’ve been and where you’re going. Fortunately, as the water level rises, these would be wiped out forever, as if you were never there, to begin with.
In contrast, when you “walk around” on the digital shoreline, be it social media or your favourite baking recipe website, your footprints are never washed away. Instead, these footprints — also known as cookies in the digital world — are collected by money-hungry algorithms owned by Big Tech to afford them with the most detailed look into your life revealing your desires, fears and dreams. Armed with this knowledge, they are able to personalise their marketing material and target you, the consumer, where it would hit the hardest. Yes, those advertisements that come up randomly on your favourite social media platform are not there by accident.
To keep things simple, your private life is not that private after all. There is always a Big Brother watching over your shoulder. This is why the Nerian Network was founded. With the amended privacy laws in the European Union, users are now able to take better control over their digital ID and live more freely. The Nerian Network aims to help users to do this by packaging all of these digital footprints individually and handing them to the end-user who will then be able to decide if they would like to monetise their data, keep it until the end of time or even remove it completely from the Internet.
