Sharky, I’m all for getting more revenue to indie artists, but I’m not so sure about your assumptions! Basically, you’re assuming that “as an artist increases in popularity the proportion of casual listeners to uber-fans will increase as well.” I would actually bet that this is incorrect. There are probably tons of folks streaming just their 3 favorite pop artists this month, whereas most of my fans are listening to LOTS of interesting artists from blogs and local scenes.
What if an artist’s 1,000 fans are all INTENSE music connoisseurs, and each listen to 200 indie albums a month? Under your new model, that indie artist would make wayyy less than Pharrell would if the same number of casual music listeners played “Happy” for 1 out of every 5 songs. (And I bet there are people who do that!)
