Well, I think you’re looking at it too hard as a kaiju film and not as a mecha film. A common trope in mecha anime is that the robots themselves are a danger. Getter Robo’s protagonists fear that the Getter will be a bigger danger to humanity than the atomic bomb. Mazinger Z is a god or a devil depending on the will of its pilot. Imagawa’s remake of Tetsujin 28 went so far as to making the titular robot a bomb itself, much like Gipsy Danger at the end of the film.

It’s about having a dangerous weapon and choosing to use it to save lives instead of taking them.
