Laid-Back Camp The Movie A relaxing, feel-good (albeit longer than it needed to be) ride. It was so great to see how these characters turned out in adulthood beyond the shield of self-speculation that the show provides. The unfulfilled romantic tension between Rin and Nadeshiko was almost too much to bear, however. Castle in the Sky Sometimes, you…

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery This was an incredibly fun, albeit already-dated, ride, equal in quality to its predecessor. Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc has cemented himself as one of the most enjoyable recurring characters in film. Rian Johnson once again uses the template of Blanc and and a pure-of-heart protagonist teaming up against a group…

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Why did Marvel Studios even make this? Nobody asked for this. By far the worst thing the MCU has ever released. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent This was an incredibly fun ride. I loved the surprising originality and clever meta of its narrative. …

One Piece Film Red I can’t believe how pleasantly surprised I was by this movie. For a non-canon, borderline fanfiction, this story had a lot of nuance and depth. Unlike many of these filler movies, you can definitely see Oda’s hands all over this one, as made evident by the superb development of its…

The Thick of It A tad bit pretentious and self indulgent, but still highly relatable from the perspective of a fellow creative. I’m so happy Fazerdaze is back! Barbarian Going into Barbarian knowing absolutely nothing about its plot, this movie really managed to subvert my expectations at every turn. This may have just been the late-night theater atmosphere, but I found this to be the first Hollywood horror film to genuinely scare me in quite some time. Its grounded, and somewhat plausible plot made it all the more engaging and disturbing. Not one of my favorite pieces of horror by any means, but definitely worth a watch.

Kiki’s Delivery Service There’s nothing like watching the exact right movie at the exact right time. I think I caught glimpses of this film back during college, but never quite sat down and absorbed it. I am confident that was for the best, as I was definitely not in the right headspace back…

The Black Phone Ethan Hawke’s performance was incredibly creepy and genuinely scary for a modern horror movie. Still, this film left much to be desired in terms of narrative payoff. A lot of plot elements were set up that simply weren’t addressed or explained, at least in any way that I could comprehend…

Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Moon Knight These Disney+ behind-the-scenes documentaries have tended to be a bit full of themselves and whitewashed, but this one in particular happened to be the most interesting of the bunch. I found it very intriguing to see the thought progression and creative process behind some of the show’s poorer decisions. …

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness I’m really not sure what to make of this one just yet, since I think my expectations going in played a substantial roll in my initial opinion. This movie oozes with Sam Raimi’s unique visual style, and I was very surprised Marvel Studios let him get away with as much…

One Piece: Episode of Skypiea A satisfactory recap of a classic arc. The film unfortunately cuts out some essential scenes, so it by no means is a replacement for reading the arc in its entirety. However, it definitely serves as a great refresher for longtime fans seeking such after the revelations of recent chapters. Princess Mononoke (Rewatch) The…
