Sadiq Khan…
NOW, I know it’s somewhat against my principles and could be described as being mildly racist (or supporting positive discrimination- which, I don’t) but I’m actually happy that Khan has basically won the mayoral election.
He’s the son of an immigrant from Pakistan, the son of a bus driver. Can a politician get anymore normal? probably not…
So, firstly, I’m pleased he’s Muslim, better, a minority. Because Khan is a minority, he shows to me, the world, that London, the UK as a whole, is still a friendly place to live.
With the rise of recent anti-euroscepticism, sparked by the EU referendum in June, has come a sense that Britain wants to go back to its policy of ‘splendid isolationism’ but have we not learnt anything from history!?
When you close in, become more sceptical of ‘foreigners’, that is when we start to lose. China lost its position in the world because it closed in on itself. The same can be said for Japan, only being opened up by force by the colonial powers.
Khan, for me, represents a huge message to the world: BRITAIN IS FRIENDLY. Britain isn’t islamophobic, for the most part and it also further reassures me that our policy of tolerance, as a nation and the fact, we’re a meritocracy and no matter where you come from, your background, your skin, you can get to the top with hard work.
And, if nothing else, it’s quite a huge step to see a Muslim in public office.
