July 19, 2017 — At the core of Healthcare Ready’s mission is the belief that we are stronger together. Working across sectors, pulling and sharing lessons and solutions from one part of healthcare, and creating multidisciplinary solutions that harness the strengths of each sector strengthens our ability to prepare and respond to crises.

The fact that the start of hurricane season this year coincided with a series of large-scale cyberattacks on healthcare — all while Zika remains a significant concern — underscores the need to keep emergency preparedness front and center and to constantly work at improving our ability to respond to crises. Healthcare Ready was formed ten years ago with a mission to strengthen preparedness and response, and today, in an era where we are facing so many different, and evolving, threats, this work is as important as ever.

I am passionate about this work and honored to assume the role of executive director of Healthcare Ready. I’m grateful for the leadership and vision of Dr. Erin Mullen and Ms. Emily Lord, who have led this organization and supported Healthcare Ready’s development in the past decade, and look forward to the next phase of Healthcare Ready’s evolution.

We’ve enjoyed new successes this year, from connecting with more parts of healthcare and patient advocacy groups to learning and sharing advancements in the field. These experiences, coupled with our responses to a wide range of events in just the first half of the year — a drug shortage, cyberattacks, winter storms, even a dam flooding — deepen our commitment to healthcare preparedness and response. I’m glad that there are organizations like Healthcare Ready staying laser-focused on improving our preparedness and response capacity, and am eager to lead the organization as we expand our work.

The rest of this year will continue to see growth for our team. We are working on research projects to share best practices and innovative ideas to improve resilience, continuing to convene patient groups and experts to understand how we can improve access to healthcare during emergencies, and continuing to advocate for the need for sustained healthcare preparedness funding. We’ll be busy, and reaching out to many of you as we work to fulfill our mission. We are all excited to see what is in store.
