Find Your Fluidity

Coordinating our mind and bodies by embracing agitation.


We human beings are never still. We are a dynamic fluid entity suspended in a time/space continuum. Put more simply, we are human movings. The idea of being still, even in the midst of meditation, is an illusion. Our whole being is a constant movement of muscle, connective tissue, water, electricity and chemical reaction. It’s impossible to be a still human unless we are dead.

Paradoxically, an experience of stillness can emerge when we embrace our fluid nature. When we allow the movements, gross and subtle, that occur spontaneously in our bodies, our minds respond with calm. When we block the movements, whether consciously or unconsciously, we end up feeling agitated.

Agitation is our mind and body’s way of letting us know we need to pay attention to what’s wanting to move within us. We must not strive to annihilate agitation; our agitation can rattle us into calm. Agitation is curdled vitality. If we give it our loving attention, heartful attention, an alchemical transformation takes place — our fluid natures are released, our nervous systems regulated and our minds stilled.

The movement released could be anything. A thrusting fist, a raised shoulder, a shaking leg, a gurning face, a twitching thumb, a bending spine, a dancing elbow: anything. The important thing is to include whatever bodily impulses are there. In other words, fall in love with what your body is up to. Dive into your fluid nature. Embrace your agitation so that it yields vitality and balances the mind.
