Harbor Springs In Black And White

Festival presenter Alison DeCamp got us thinking about what the Library of Congress has on file for Harbor Springs. What we found is stunning.

Harbor Springs is a colorful town. Each season brings its own unique coat of paint to the town; the snow covered white winter wonderland, the blues of spring as everything begins to thaw, the yellows and reds as the shops open their doors for the summer, and the orange of the tunnel of trees in the fall. When we started looking at the images of Harbor Springs that the Library of Congress has on file, it was very surreal to see the town in black and white, imagining the colors that were too advanced for the imaging technology at that time to capture.

A portion of these images could be replicated by someone today with a film camera, while others depict a completely different town. Harbor Springs is a town that values history as well as welcoming the present.

The photographers (if there were more than one) are unknown, but most images were a product of the Detroit Publishing Company. We are pleased to share this rich history with you through images (a form of story telling in it’s own right), all courtesy of the Library Of Congress.
