HUBweek Highlights: Brew the Charles

We love the Charles so much that we drank it. Literally.

Brew the Charles during HUBweek 2016 was undoubtedly one of the tastier events of the week. Working with Newton-based water technology company Desalitech, six local Massachusetts breweries took Charles River water and turned it into beer for a tasting and competition for over 1,000 eager attendees at the HUBweek 2016 Closing Party.

And while the drinks flowed freely, it took some serious science to create them. Earlier this year, Desalitech ran thousands of gallons of Charles River water through its industry-leading treatment and purification system. From there, the Boston Beer Company, Cape Ann Brewing Company, Castle Island Brewing Co., Harpoon Brewery, Idle Hands Craft Ales, and Ipswich Ale Brewery all created custom, craft brews that turned science into beer.

The result? Some delicious beer all brewed for a good cause, with 20% of event proceeds donated to the Charles River Conservancy’s Swim the Charles Program. By the end of the night, expert judges and surprise guest Eliza Dushku awarded Castle Island’s dry hopped cream ale “Chuck” as the Judges Choice winner and Ipswich Ale’s marzen “Chucktoberfest” walked away with the Crowd Favorite title.
