Student teams & speakers announced for Next Generation of Ideas
With more than 60 colleges and universities, it’s no secret that some of the world’s most creative student-founded startups have called Greater Boston home. And we think there is no better time to showcase them than HUBweek.
At HUB Presents: Next Generation of Ideas, featuring the Beantown Throwdown, sponsored by SevOne, student teams will pitch their ideas to a live audience in hopes of being crowned the winner of the fourth annual Beantown Throwdown. We’re excited to welcome students from more than 10 local colleges and universities including Babson College, Berklee, Boston College, Boston University, Harvard University, MIT, Northeastern University, Tufts University, Wentworth, UMass Boston, and UMass Lowell.
This year’s teams are presenting a wide variety of innovative ideas–from using virtual reality to help aging populations to connecting vets to the resources they need. Here’s a rundown of 8 of the teams you’ll find at the event:
Dropzone for Veterans, Babson College: connecting vets to the resources they need
Echo, Boston College: turning every smart device into a personal DJ booth
Aday, Harvard University: using machine learning to take the pain out of hourly work scheduling
Rendever Health, MIT: helping aging populations by way of virtual reality
Cookin, Northeastern University: offering “buy-it-yourself” alternatives to expensive meal plan services
Huambo Group, Tufts University: bringing connectivity to millions across the globe
CircularBlu, UMass Boston: decreasing hospital waste by 20%
bistara, Berklee College of Music: empowering students to be their own bosses
After teams pitch their ideas, the audience–consisting of executives from public and private companies, angel and venture investors, startup founders and CEOs, students and the curious will vote using play money to “invest” in their favorite startup idea. Once the votes are tallied, an awards ceremony will follow to celebrate the winning student team.
Hosted by HUBweek in partnership with MIT Enterprise Forum of Cambridge, this competition connects student innovators with successful startup founders and CEOs in a fun, collaborative environment. The event will also feature an expert panel comprised of successful next generation startup founders including Elsa Sze, founder and CEO of Agora; Frederick Townes, co-founder and COO of Placester; and Rebecca Liebman, co-founder of LearnLux. Panel moderator Scott Kirsner from The Boston Globe will lead an insightful discussion with our panelists to uncover their key insights, advice and lessons learned from their startup experiences.
