Bootcamp week 2 — the last lap.
It’s week two and all I have to say is it’s been quite a journey! After the rigorous and in-depth technical and soft skills training in week 1, we were now tasked each with a unique problem to solve in order to put into practice what we have learnt. This was to be our last checkpoint to becoming an Andela fellow and the tension and excitement filled the air as we scrambled to get a good start to the projects.
The instructions we handed to us through Trello, the tasks were to be chosen voluntarily securing you task by adding yourself as a member in the task card, by the evening everyone had a designated task to work on. The competition clearly going to be intense and personally was determined to showcase my skills and what I’ve learnt so far.
My project was building a mini matlab like python console application capable of doing basic arithmetic operations on matrices and arrays. This at first sight was quite daunting. I’ve sat through Linear Algebra class in college and now I had to translate this to python code. In college our tool of choice was R, their data frames both inbuilt and community packages make it ideal for this kind mathematical calculations. I could only wish I’d be able to even minutely mimic some of magical utilities to python, and in a week!
It was back to basic Linear Algebra recaps trying to get up to speed and remind myself how to match matrices to multiply them or doing inverses. Mid-through the week it was clearly apparent to me this quite massive task and tried my best to browse through other proven libraries that have implemented the same logic. At the end it was a great learning experience and felt like a full-blown statistician battling through the vector and scalar logic.
I was extremely excited to have gone through to the second week after the first week eliminations. The opportunity and possibility of become part of Andela drives my endeavor to push my limits to learn. This possibility certainly warrants all the hype and buzz about and around Andela.
At the end of the week we are going to present our projects an audience including the Andela fellows who will a chance to rate us and give constructive comments on our projects. The plan is to ace it and my next blog post (‘title’).startswith(“fellow”).
