Development boards like Arduino have helped spur the idea that anyone can build an awesome device. Unfortunately, many of these projects look like a jumble of messy wires when complete. This is certainly helpful for learning, but what if you want to show off your project to friends, family, or perhaps even investors?

Since looks matter in many instances, the M5Stack’s goal is to make prototypes not only useful, but also beautiful thanks to its sleek aluminum shell. Currently live on Kickstarter, the system consists of a core module with an ESP8266 chip and LCD display that can be stacked on top of a plethora of expansion boards — these include scopes, environment sensors, PLCs, GPS, batteries, and more.

The platform is completely open source, and supports Wi-Fi, LoRa, and Arduino. When combined, these modules can create a wide range of products, from sockets and switches to multimeters and automation controllers.

Experienced users can program their custom stacks with the Arduino IDE, while beginners can take advantage of M5Stack’s simple drag-and-drop online coding tool.

It’s certainly an interesting idea, with many potential applications. Be sure to check it out on Kickstarter now, where the HAX-supported startup is seeking $40,000.
