Microsoft’s Surface event in New York City brought some exciting hardware updates to the forefront, even in the absence of longtime division head Panos Panay, whose departure was announced recently. CEO Satya Nadella stepped onto the stage to reveal the stars of the show: the Surface Laptop Go 3 and Surface Laptop Studio 2.
Fifteen months after the debut of the Surface Laptop Go 2, Microsoft has given its budget-friendly laptop a significant makeover. The Surface Laptop Go 3 boasts an impressive 12th-gen Intel Core i5 CPU, paired with Intel Iris Xe graphics. In simple terms, this means a significant boost in performance, with Microsoft claiming an impressive 88% increase compared to the original Surface Laptop Go from the end of 2020.
As the name implies, portability is very much the thing here. It weighs in a bit less than 2.5 pounds — quite good for a 12.4-inch machine. That’s a touchscreen, naturally, in keeping with the rest of the line. It features a pair of Studio mics, coupled with Dolby Atmos–tuned speakers. Microsoft is also promising 15 hours of life on a charge.
The new addition to the Surface family is the Laptop Studio 2, featuring a 14.4-inch display and powered by a 13th-gen Intel Core H-class processor. What’s exciting is the optional Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics, available in models like RTX 4050, 4060, or RTX 2000. This laptop caters to creative professionals, offering two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 ports, a traditional USB-A port, and even a microSD card reader.
Both the Surface Laptop Go 3 and Surface Laptop Studio 2 are available for preorder, with shipping commencing on October 3. The Surface Laptop Go 3 begins at $799, while the Surface Laptop Studio 2 is priced at $1,999.
These launches come amidst rumors of Panos Panay’s departure from the division. Reports suggest it was due to budget cuts and the cancellation of experimental Surface devices. Nevertheless, Microsoft is forging ahead with these impressive additions to its Surface lineup.
