Rachel, FYI all this paperwork and onerous reporting also falls on US citizens who have lived for a few years abroad and have old savings accounts and pension plans there that cannot be closed due to local regulation. We lived abroad for a few years and filled out taxes for the entire time. We saved in local pension plans that hold a significant chunk of our retirement funds. I live in fear that one day, despite us doing all we should to report them, the US will decide that they are not “real” retirement savings and fine the heck out of them. Money that we have saved legally for years. So even back in the US we are not free of this fear.
