Have a Clogged Drain? Steps to Try Before Calling a Plumber
For an Ann Arbor homeowner (or any homeowner, for that matter) nothing is more frustrating than a clogged drain in a bathroom or kitchen. Sometimes a clogged drain can be easily remedied, other times it can indicate a major problem. If the water in your sinks, toilet, or shower/tub is not flowing freely as it should, there are a few things you can do yourself before throwing in the towel and calling a professional plumber.
These steps should be done in sequence for best results.
First — try a plunger. The old plunger is an excellent tool not only for toilets but sink drains as well. If you have a clogged sink drain, a smaller plunger will be more efficient; a larger plunger is best for the toilet. Place the plunger on top of the drain, ensuring a good seal around the outer rim. Water standing in the sink will make your plunging efforts, even more, useful because the water backed up in the drain will help dislodge the clog. Vigorously work the plunger in an up and down motion several times — and if it is not effective the first time, try a few more times before giving up. It can take quite a bit of plunging to loosen up a clog so it can go on down the drain.
Next — use a drain auger. Drain augers, or “drain snakes,” are often effective for more stubborn clogs. These devices are simply a length of pipe or flexible wire with a wire cutting head, used to insert into the drain. After inserting, turn the auger as it moves through the drain; this makes it possible for the wire head to cut through the clog, dislodging it.
Last — try a drain cleaner. When a plunger and/or auger do not remedy the problem, try a chemical drain cleaner. Many are effective. However, the chemicals that work to dissolve clogs can be harmful so be extremely careful and follow directions.
