Why do we try our best to conform to beauty standards?

Beauty standards have been a big part of every culture and society. In our society today, there are pictures everywhere of women and men with bodies that are almost impossible to obtain, and yet we aspire to look like them. I have spent a majority of my life hating the way I look, because of the fact that I could never look like them. I have put countless hours pumping iron in the gym, doing cardio, and dieting, but I have never been able to look like those we idol. It has gotten to the point where I breakdown and cry because I just can’t do it. It is not just me though. I have many friends who have tried everything they can to look like a model. They have even gotten to the point where they have made themselves sick. It is not okay, and I want to know why we still try to conform to these standards.
I know now that there are big movements against our standards. Everyone is saying that true beauty is on the inside, and I completely agree with them. It just seems though that this is only being said to comfort those, like me, who are hurt by these standards. Things haven’t changed. People are still judging by the way people look on the outside. I find it unpleasing. To this day I still find myself going to the gym to make myself visually appealing. I just don’t know why.
