Do You Feel Alone at Work?

Ever heard the saying that you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with?

It’s a concept that’s been around for a while, and for good reason. Our environment has a profound impact on our thoughts, beliefs, and ultimately, our actions.

Drains and Radiators

As the old proverb goes, “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” This sentiment is echoed by the Stoic philosopher Seneca, who said, “We should select the kind of people we want to emulate and choose the leader whose qualities we admire.” In other words, we should be intentional about the people we surround ourselves with.

This concept is especially important for those of us who are self-employed or work independently. When you’re not part of a traditional office environment, it can be easy to feel isolated and disconnected from others. I know this firsthand from my experience of leaving a full-time job and embarking on a solo career. While I’ve enjoyed the freedom and personal growth that comes with working independently, I’ve also felt lonely and isolated at times.

That’s why I’ve made it a priority to build a supportive team around me. I lead group coaching sessions and public speaking workshops for senior leaders, business owners, and self-employed individuals on topics such as finding your voice and purpose, avoiding burnout, and managing energy. But I’ve also realized the importance of having my own team — a group of peers, cheerleaders, friends, mentors, and of course coaches who can provide support and guidance.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we need to do everything alone, but that’s simply not true. We all need help and support from others, no matter what our goals or aspirations may be. When we surround ourselves with people who share our values, inspire us, and hold us accountable, we’re more likely to achieve success and fulfilment in our lives.

Of course, building a supportive team isn’t always easy. It takes time, effort, and a willingness to be vulnerable and open with others. But the rewards are well worth it. When we have people in our corner who believe in us and want to see us succeed, we’re more likely to take risks, try new things, and push ourselves to be our best selves.

So, take a moment to consider the five people you spend the most time with.
Are they people who inspire you, challenge you, and support you?
Or are they people who hold you back, drain your energy, and discourage you from pursuing your dreams?
If it’s the latter, it may be time to start building a more supportive team around you.

Remember, you don’t have to do it all alone.

Surround yourself with people who lift you up and help you become the best version of yourself.

As Seneca said, “Associate with people who are likely to improve you.”

Choose your team wisely, and watch as your life and career soar to new heights.
