Finding your tribe is finding your true self
Growing up, I was a dedicated participant, a.k.a. “follower”, of Korean stereotypes and prejudices to fit in the society. Unfortunately, I admit that I had very little opportunity to speak out loud about my own unique perspectives about the world around me. There were many times that I felt like my ideas were not valid or embarrassing because I was thinking differently than most people. Although I decided to keep quiet, I was always asking myself if there is always only one correct answer for each situation or problem in life.
Through 8 years of my Buddhist practice, I reminded myself every morning and evening to realize my self-worth and value my thoughts and feelings as it is. Soon after I understood that I’m a human being who are not perfect just like everybody else, I decided to summon up the courage to speak up for what I believe and take criticism like a champ rather than hiding and denying my desires for value creation.
Mainly, I believe in the simultaneity of cause and effect. Daisaku Ikeda, a Buddhist philosopher, peace-builder and educator, said,
“Positive thoughts, words and actions create positive effects in the lives of individuals, leading to happiness. Negative thoughts, words and actions on the other hand — those that in some way undermine the dignity of life — lead to unhappiness.”
Although I respect all perspectives on various issues in our society, a new and positive look at old problems is an essential need for finding valid solutions that create value.
Based on my belief, it was my turn to discover my own tribe where my heart truly belongs to. And I decided to build a tribe for achieving human health through educating people about the U.S. food system and passing stricter regulations of factory farming. I believe that human happiness built on cruelty cannot survive, and I am ready to connect with like-minded people who belong to the same tribe.
