I hate to say it, but the public often doesn’t want to read this important stuff. When I was a journalist, it drove me crazy that my work on complicated, important stories frequently got little response from the general public. Unfortunately, cable news is giving people what they want. Not that I want journalists to stop trying … and, by the way, I intend to teach my college journalism students to pursue the ideal of reporting on all the communities. I think the journalistic model is right, but the execution is often lousy.
