Could there be a short cut to that confidence for adult students. There ought to be, since it isn’t all that warranted in us old BASIC-fiddlers, and isn’t all that unwarranted in those who start later.

Even if there isn’t, things such as mandatory programming classes in elementary school might not help confidence. It depends a lot on how people see themselves compared to what’s “normal”.
