This is perhaps a sidetrack, but have you in your own fiction explored the possibility of using actor models (i.e. Netlogo) to model these dynamics of cultures? That way, maybe it’s possible to avoid the most glaring implausibilities — or, at least, coming up with justifications for the various unreasonableness you need to make a plausible setting.
