Celia Bertoia

Director of the foundation, Celia has worn many hats in her life. Experience as a Realtor, Fundraiser, Ultra Runner, Race Timer and Journalist led her to wear the biggest hat of all — that of furthering the legacy of Harry Bertoia. Celia and her father always had a special bond, and now her understanding of Harry’s philosophy and desires propels her to unveil his true character and career history. Her recently published biography, The Life and Work of Harry Bertoia, reveals a taste of who this amazing man was. Some of the foundation items on her wish list are:

  1. organizing a Catalogue Raisonné of Bertoia’s oeuvre,
  2. re-locating the handful of public sculptures that are currently in storage and
  3. finding a museum home for the Sonambient Barn collection of Bertoia’s Masterworks.

Celia gives a good presentation, can help you find private collectors in your area for an exhibit, is a burgeoning fine art appraiser, can give you insights into the how and why of Bertoia and knows the archived files better than anyone. Celia lives in Montana, occasionally in Tucson, and travels frequently.

Eleanor Davis

Assistant to the Director and Web Manager, Eleanor is the foundation’s “Gal Friday” who can do just about anything. She is young with lots of energy, is the cheery voice behind all of the foundation’s social networking sites, and has more enthusiasm about Bertoia than even the fans!

She archives all recent articles and blogs and citations of Bertoia, handles online communication and is always one to come up with creative new ways of marketing and keeping in touch with the public. Every office needs a computer guru who is up on the latest geeky tools and can fix minor computer catastrophes, and she is it. She holds down the fort when Celia is traveling. Her diverse skills have proven invaluable and Celia could not do what she does without her.

Mary Petrilli

HarryBertoia foundation Board member, Mary is a marketing whiz and has an excellent sense for business and money. While she works full time at Mattel Toys, her insightful suggestions and “why don’t we…” moments are nothing less than genius.

Living in California allows Mary to include the west coast’s point of view and a different perspective. Mary is the most nurturing generous person you could imagine and has an answer for every challenge.

She is the grand-niece of Harry, and even helps out with historical research at times by simply asking her relatives in the Detroit area what happened way back when.

Wilbur “Bill” Springer

Harry Bertoia foundation Board member, Bill’s vast knowledge of the art world is simply indispensable. He owned and managed an art gallery near Allentown, PA, for many years, often giving local talent a place to exhibit. He was a real estate appraiser for decades, and has a great sense of value in the ever-changing world of investment.

Although officially retired, Bill is extremely active not only in sports but in more projects than he cares to admit. His passion for Bertoia art is unsurpassed and he always keeps an eye on the market for Bertoia. He has given much wise and experienced direction to the foundation and helped in so many areas that we dare not even label him. Bill lives in Florida with strong ties to Pennsylvania.

Aaron Saxton and Maria Armada

This West Virginian couple, who owns a fabulous mid-century modern store in South Charleston (History Never Repeats), is wildly excited about Bertoia jewelry in particular. They enjoy Bertoia’s touch so much that they drove 6 hours to initially meet Celia at Cranbrook, and then said the magic words “How can we help?”

Their expertise in and love of modern jewelry prompted them to take over the research and organization of the Catalogue Raisonné of Bertoia’s jewelry, including the sleek tea pots and vases of the 1940s. Maria’s background in research and lobbying in Washington D.C. makes her the perfect match for her husband Aaron who knows finance and how to make a deal. Their estate sale and flea market skills to land amazing finds are incredible. Aaron’s New Zealand accent tops off his charm and people skills to balance out Maria’s logistical and organizational expertise.
