What do you love most in this world? She asked.
.
The question’s warmth and simplicity caught my breath. Such a very intimate question.
I love our home of course. I love being here, in the garden. I love my friends, Knud and Ruth, Copenhagen, and the Mermaid on the Rock. The Household Cavalry turns me on, Spaghetti Bolognese, not forgetting Tobermory’s single malt; you know how much I love that! Then, well, then there’s the cliffs, and running on the shore with Reckless. I love tales of Arabian Knights. I loved that moment when Elise asked of Richard, Is it you…are you the one? I love the oceans. Christmas. I love the Cathedral St. Paul’s. And who doesn’t love Paris, Rodin, and, of course, the Spanish Steps. I love writing, being at my desk, the view from the window, and so many things, but you? What do you love most in the world?
The pause was short, and my wife uttered one word.
You.
I turned away, tears welling.
