First Sunrise

The before sunrise stillness in the air makes us feel as if we are in the middle of a cloud that shelters us from any wind. The thickness of the humidity is an extra buffer to any distant sound. There’s a hollow sound of our feet against the moist sand, bubbles still popping from a wave that just pulled back out to sea. Each time we look back up, the sky has changed color, the clouds bring a new tone, the sea a new transparency. The shadows on the beach evaporate, replaced by an increasing vibrancy. We stop as we notice the sun shimmering across the horizon’s sky and cascading off the ripples. As it lifts, you turn me into you and gift me with my first sunrise kiss.
