We were very curious to know more from our expert Shawna and are lucky to have exclusive insight into Shawna’s motivation and passion for the Body Talk System!
HG: What is the uniqueness for you about treating with the Body Talk method?
What is unique about BodyTalk is that it treats at the energetic and consciousness levels and is guided by the innate wisdom of the person. All dis-ease, whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual, flows down from imbalance at the consciousness level of the being, the deepest aspect of who we are. It is the innate wisdom, the inborn mechanism for homeostasis, that best knows how to resolve imbalance and guides the process for moving into more enjoyable balance. I am currently training in the Epigenetic techniques of BodyTalk with a molecular biologist/BodyTalk Instructor, who completed her PHD in the Human Genome project. Epigenetics is the study of how our lifestyle factors, diet, toxins/chemical exposure, drugs — therapeutic or illegal, exercise, stress, microbiome, social interaction, psychological state, traumas, etc. shape the expression of the genetic code, in ourselves or our ancestors. For example, people exposed to DDT in the 1950’s, their DNA can contain an epigenetic ‘tag’ which leads to obesity in their offspring. These ‘tags’ lock the body into dysfunction as the genetic code can not be properly read anymore by the body. Epigenetics is the forefront of research in Western medicine but as of yet, there are no methods of treatment. It can however, be addressed through the epigenetic BodyTalk techniques.
HG: Where did you get the inspiration from to practice holistic health and most importantly ‘The Body Talk method’?
I recently turned forty and have lived for much of my live with fatigue, pain — physical and emotional, and weakness. The weakness has become so great that I once spent 4 months on bedrest. I had so little energy in my body, it had to shut down energy to my muscles to keep my organs from being severely damaged. This happened about 6 years ago. I had been seeing a natural health practitioner for several years and she had helped me a lot prior but every method we had used before made no difference at this time, and often made it worse. With my first treatment of BodyTalk, my whole family noticed a difference. As I lay on the massage table for many treatments after, I was fascinated by the chart and the many modalities that are accessible through it: Western medicine’s scientifically supported research in fields such as neuroscience, epigenetics, and psychoneuroimmunology along with a large number of highly recognized ancient and modern healing methods and principles of knowledge, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, yoga and meditation philosophies, Chiropractic, consciousness studies and Energy Psychology. I had a background in counselling and therapy and I realized that somewhere along the way, even though the sessions were to help me regain physical strength, many of the issues I had tried to resolve through my own personal therapy, a requirement of my Masters program, had been addressed along the way.
HG: What was the most overwhelming experience for you practising the Body Talk method?
Besides my own experience, one of my most overwhelming experiences in practice might be some sessions with a mentally handicapped man. He was fearful to come but decided to because one of his workers had seen me and had quite a dramatic experience herself. It was a different session because none of the techniques that came up or information was of interest to him, many clients really like to hear the details. At the end of his session, he was beaming with light and giggling and hooting. He told me “this is better than weed! I feel soooooo good!!!” His worker and I sat with him and enjoyed his experience with him for quite a while afterward. It never ceases to bring a smile to my face:)
HG: What makes you want to offer the Body Talk method online & remotely and what is the biggest advantage off an online consultation for your customers?
Because energy and consciousness are not confined to a physical space, my work can be done from anywhere. Even if you are living somewhere you do not have a BodyTalk practitioner or if you would like a BodyTalk practitioner that specializes in a particular area, my specialties are trauma and epigenetic work, sessions are every bit as effective when they are done remotely. I offer my work remotely because I live overseas and it means my family can move or travel and I am still able to do and enjoy my work!
HG: What do you find the most challenging in your daily professional life as a Body Talk practitioner?
What I find most challenging about my work and most enjoyable, is that I need to get myself out of the way, the session does not rely on me to direct it. In the BodyTalk System we have a sophisticated group of classes that train the practitioner to function in a structured intuition. For the structured aspect, this means I need to know the theories, techniques and how to navigate through my charts, but for the intuition aspect, I tune into the innate wisdom of the person, and let it guide the session. I ask the innate wisdom what the priorities are for the person at this time. While there can be many levels of break down in a person, working with the priority of the innate wisdom means a smoother, gentler shift. This is what made all the difference for my recovery 6 years ago. Any therapy that did not follow the innate guidance of my being, overwhelmed me and set me back.
HG: What keeps you the most motivated to keep practicing in holistic health?
What keeps me motivated is remembering my past and how unempowered I felt. I had no skills and I had no connection with my body so my health issues were very scary. When I see my clients learning techniques they can use at home(I teach a one day class called BodyTalk Access, 5 techniques in 10 minutes to improve and maintain health that need only hands, Q-tips and clean water) and coming back to excitedly tell me what happened, or when some information comes from the session, or a shift that brings an ‘aha’ moment for a client, I am reminded of how good it has felt for me, moving from a place that felt so dark and scary and now has hope and joy. I feel I was given the gift of life through BodyTalk and now I want to share it with others who desire the same.
