Hahahahah, honestly if I’m going to eat corned beef in any other fashion, I’m completely with you. That canned stuff, though.. somehow when it mixes with that gravy… a kind of magic happens… I’m only half way kidding here. Seriously anyone I’ve ever cooked that for has gone completely mental over it.
I’m weirdly pleased that you actually knew the canned stuff I was talking about, hahahahhaha.
Unlike Spam (which I haaaaaaaaaate) the Brazillian pseudo corned beef seems to undergo a reaction with the near boiling gravy where the fats melt and flavor the gravy while releasing the actual bits of meat through-out it.
Seriously an entire skillet of that probably costs a grand total of $0.75. We were pretty poor when I was a kid so stuff like that was common, but still today when everyone in my family is doing great and has an abundance, that corned-beef gravy gets made :) I typically get it once a year when I visit my family. I figure health-wise it’s best to keep it that way, ha!!
Another ridiculously cheap but delicious dinner for the poor that I remember: A can of condensed cream of chicken soup heated (without being diluted) and poured over toast. Shockingly delicious. :)
