I forgive the Friends episode because it was the funniest related-to-the-80s hairstyle to have Chandler suddenly appear with, and I don’t want to ascribe too much to the writers, but I like to imagine someone like Chandler, in his mostly failed attempts at being “cool” would be the guy with that hairstyle long after it’s brief relevance. :D
I think the big problem with less ridiculously-intended 80s representation has to do do with millennial writers being a bit too full of themselves to seriously consult one of us “old people” for authenticity + audiences today being spoonfed their movies/tv shows, so it’s LOOK, IT’S 80s STUFF, SO MUCH YOU KNOW, IT’S GOT TO BE THE 80s, GET IT, SEE? THIS IS SET IN THE 80s! THE 1980s! EVERYONE WORE PARACHUTE PANTS AND MEMBERS ONLY JACKETS IN THE 80s! SEE? IT’S THE 80s!!!!!
Oh… this must be set in the 80s, I’m glad they clubbed me over the head with that or I might have actually had to watch and pay some minimal attention.
I’m sure it’s already been done, but I’m looking forward to movies specifically set in the late 90s where EVERYONE is wearing unwashed jeans and threadbare flannel shirts, over ironically uncool t-shirts, or perhaps tied around the waist.
Then the 2000s where every character will be dressed as a hipster. :D
