Myths have made their way into the electronic medium

Myths, folklores, and urban legends have been a way for people to entertain themselves and pass time. There is definitely a cultural significance in these stories, to a point where they have transcended to the electronic format—the internet.

Users of open post forums , such as 4chan and reddit, have created an internet niche of story tellers. There is no definite number of people in this niche nor is there a way to gain membership to be apart of this trend, as anyone can join. There is actually a site that contains works from various users of different internet tribes.

This website contains user generated stories ranging from different genres.

One of the stories that have struck me the most is a story about a Russian gas experiment gone wrong. You can read more about it here.

There has also been a recent surge of myths that deal with haunted computer hardware and vintage gaming systems. One of these urban legends deal with a popular handheld Nintendo video game, Pokemon. One famous urban legend, also called a creepy pasta, concerns about the release of a popular version of the Pokemon game series: Green and Red. According to myth, children who played Green or Red who encountered a town in the game, called Lavender Town , experienced suicidal thoughts and depression because of the soundtrack. It turns out to be a dud, but the soundtrack did cause headaches to 7-12 year olds playing the game.

Another story that involves haunted video games is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which was released on the Nintendo 64. The story deals with a teenager who decides to play an old video game cartridge that is missing its cover art. After playing it for a while, strange things start to occur and the video game haunts the teen psychologically. BEN DROWENED was a reoccurring message that appeared in various instances of the game, a hint that something wrong has happened.

Slenderman is also another popular creepypasta that originated from a PC videogame. The whole premise of the game is to find a number of notes scattered through an abandoned environment. The catch? avoiding making eye contact to this lovely fellow :

Slender man sparked an on going fan base of spin off stories and merchandise. There have been multiple attempts in recreating the original game in different formats, but the original one remains to be a classic experience that cannot be recreated.
