A 2016 study claims to have found the number-one incentive for making customers shop more online: free shipping. The Walker Sands Future of Retail Study surveyed over 1,400 consumers from the United States and reportedly found that 31 percent of them shop online at least once a week. A staggering nine out of 10 participants cited free shipping as the strongest incentive for shopping online.

Of the people surveyed, 69 percent said one-day shipping entices them to shop more online, with 68 percent saying free returns and exchanges also help sway their shopping decisions. While only 9 percent of consumers surveyed actually used same-day shipping in the past year, 49 percent said that same-day shipping is more likely to make them shop online.

The clear takeaway here is that businesses offering free shipping on their products are more likely to entice customers to shop online, with one-day shipping giving them even more motivation, despite its lesser use.
