What is Heimo?

Picture the following in your mind. You feel depressed and bummed out. Somehow, you end up in a place where peer support groups gather. People sitting in groups and talk to each other. You know AA-club for recovering alcoholics, right? That type of place.

However, here there are various groups for a vast range of problems, such as depression, cancer or domestic violence. Also, there seems to be empty rooms where anybody can set up a group on whatever topic they have in mind. And turns out people don’t use their own names on their name tags, a nickname is just fine. There’s no social classes here, the executive and the working man are on the same line.

You notice there’s quite a lot of talking and active discussion going on in some of the groups. How can you get your voice heard? You feel also a little bit shy to speak out but that’s ok, you’re new here, you don’t know anybody. Some of the people have “Hero” on their name tags. So what’s that about? You are told that these people are experienced peer supporters who have been here a while and recovered from a major life crisis themselves. As it happens, you can chat with some of them. That’s not bad, you think. Let’s give it a try.

But how can you be sure which Hero to choose? Who would understand you and the things you’re going through? You realize that on the message board by the hallway there are profiles about the backgrounds of the Heros. The profiles describe what they’ve been through and how they can help others. People have also rated and evaluated each Hero based on their ability to help and support others. Kind of like Uber or Tripadvisor.

That’s so helpful, you think. So you pick a Hero and have a private session. It feels damn good to open up — finally somebody understand you! For the first time, you feel you’re not alone with your problems and it really is possible to get better. If these guys can recover, why couldn’t I? Next time, you share your story to others in a group. In fact, telling your story to a bigger audience makes you feel pretty good too. It’s great to be heard and to realize your story is meaningful to others as well. Suddenly, you have all this energy and you decide to form your own group because you have a very good idea for a topic. It’s pretty awesome to see so many people here who want and are able to help!
