Life of a Journalist: Frank Del Olmo
Frank Del Olmo was a well -respected journalist, where he covered topics such as Immigration, Education, Crime and Labor. These social and political topics are still relevant in today’s society, especially within the Latino community. He was able to integrate important tools into his reporting in ways that is still similar to journalist todays reporting.
Frank Del Olmos career started out as an undergraduate student at Cal State Northridge, working for the schools newspaper. During this time CSUN was going through a time of movement, such as the Black and Chicano Movement, these movements caught interest for Frank Del Olmo and would soon base a lot of his research and articles that showcased the social movement that was occurring at the time. His career within journalism started growing and soon was working as editorial writer for the LA Times becoming well known for his overview on social Hispanic- Americans issues.

Frank reported on relevant topics that are still present in today’s communities especially within Latino communities, much of the process he took while reporting is still similar to how many journalist do today. Some of the tools that are still necessary in for reporters consist of Newspaper clipping and notes.

Much of the work that Frank Del olmo created was based on the research and the notes he had when a social event occurred. One of the tools that helped him were newspaper clippings and notes. Without the notes and information that the media had gathered he would not have been able to write a lot of his research that he was doing towards Hispanic- American topics.

Press releases were also and still remain important for any journalist. A press release serves to pitch the idea for any social event with the purpose to get journalist to write a story. This method of reporting is still seen today, journalist are able to get a brief background of what is occurring and the background of any organization.
For any journalist, early drafts of stories are important when writing for a news organization. Before any stories are approved by editors, it has to go through a process of editing. It is the responsibility of the journalist to present their work as concrete and informative as possible.

Interviews are also a great source that journalist use today to write their stories. Without the community input on the subject the reader will not be able to connect to the story and the article won’t be credible as well.

Much of the work Frank gathered as a reporter such as news clippings, taking notes, press releases, creating draft and making edits of stories are important elements for a journalist. I believe the only difference in which reporting has changed has been the technology side of journalism. With technology more is on screen than on paper however, it does not eleminate the elements that a journalist needs to write articles.
