CHICAGO — The Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), which launched a grassroots fundraising effort to provide on the ground assistance to the victims of the worst wildfires Greece has ever experienced, announced its largest donation of the effort so far. The American Jewish Committee (AJC) has provided a $10,000 grant to our effort in order to provide immediate assistance to the victims of the fires

According to HALC’s Executive Director, Endy Zemenides: “The Greek word φιλία means friendship and love. It forms the root of so many words that are appropriate at this moment: philanthropy, philotimo, philhellene. Over the years, AJC has exhibited all these qualities and has demonstrated its love of Greece and Hellenes worldwide over and over. We have partnered with AJC for years and have seen AJC expend its political and diplomatic capital every time Greece has needed it. And now, in a moment of need for the people of Greece, AJC’s CEO David Harris personally met with us and offered this grant. We are grateful to our φίλοι at the AJC.”

Before the AJC donation, HALC’s online fundraising had surpassed $155,000 and nearly 2,000 donors. Initial distributions to the Hellenic Red Cross and SOS Children’s Villages Greece will be made this week.
