My feet never felt so unsure of the next step than the hike up Mount Shasta through snow-covered hills.

Tears.

Two minutes into the hike towards Mount Shasta and I knew I was in for a ride my heart wasn’t expecting.

Tears flowed freely over my cheeks as I realized “mountain climbing” was not for me.

The cute Los Angeles Griffith Observatory hike was no preparation for the slippery snow that made walking in a straight line impossible.

My husband and I were dating then but even then he was my best friend. As I had no shame in screaming in frustration as the 50-pound backpack weighed heavily with each step I took.

Looking back I am surprised I made it to the summit of Mount Shasta. I assumed that somehow Mount Shasta was connected to Shasta Soda Pop so in the adventure of the mountain climbing they might have soda machines.

I was wrong — so terribly wrong.

The journey was difficult on both my mind, body and places in my spirit. The core of the hike was to bring awareness for former and current foster youth so I no matter the struggle — I was resolute in not turning back (even through…
