Therapy: Yay or Nay.
I’ve been struggling with my mental life lately. I sometimes scream at myself just for small errors or even for imaginary ones. I don’t know if I am depressed or just moody, but I can’t remember the last time I was happy for real. I can fake happy really easy, actually I can fake anything easy. My question is, do you think that a therapist could help me?

Dear Confused and Frustrated,
I won’t address your mental health issues, I don’t want to lead you in a direction that isn’t healthy or helpful. This isn’t because I don’t care, it is simply because I am vastly unqualified to give you wise advice in this area.
This is where a therapist can and will help. I am big supporter of therapy. However, I will caution you before you dive in.
Getting a therapist can be like shopping for a used car. You may test drive a few dozen before you find that one special one that you feel comfortable with. You will find a few you hate, a few you like, maybe one or two you love but can’t afford, but eventually you will find that one. That one will help you. Understand that it is a process, with hard work ahead, but you will be so happy that you put in the work.
Now, therapy can be very expensive. Talk to your insurance company, doctor, even local hospitals. Therapy is not the taboo subject that it once was. Many people will be happy to help you find a way to afford it. Therapist often work for way below their usual rate if you ask them.
You’ve made the first step, you are reaching out and asking if it is a good idea to get help. This is fantastic, keep going.
