Spirit on the water
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. (Genesis 1:2)
In Genesis we read about God creating the earth from a formless and void “soup of nothingness”. Despite this void space, the Spirit of God is hovering over the waters, gently resting, preparing for what God the father was about to do: call life from the nothingness.
Over the past few weeks, we have been seeking to have more of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Much like the earth, we can feel dry and void when we do not know the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it seems to be hovering too far from our current circumstances; or it is intangible and seems too mystic to make sense. However, just as the Spirit hovered over the waters, the Spirit hovers over us. All the earth had to do was be still and let the Spirit hover.
So today, at whatever time of day you are able to do this. Find somewhere to be still. Close your eyes, breath deeply and think of the moments before all of creation burst forth from nothing. Let your mind be filled with the peace and tranquility that existed as the Spirit hovered over the void. Invite God into the areas where you feel have become formless. Let him rest on you, hover over you.
Spirit of God, you are here
Thank you for your presence
Even though I may not feel it, you are with me
I invite you to hover over me
Fill the areas of my life where rot and dust have been growing
Let me know your gentle presence as you prepare me
Prepare me to burst forth your creative life
