Before connecting an IP camera, let us know more about it

What is an IP camera?

An IP camera is a device that receives data and sends image data via a network, like the Internet. These types of cameras do not require local recording storage, unlike analog cameras. One can watch the live feed through their IP camera as the data is shared across the network.

There are a large number of benefits to opting for IP cameras over the traditional cameras

  • Remote access: The user can access the camera remotely over the network, allowing one to monitor his property from any corner of the world.
  • Higher resolution: IP cameras can record & stream video at a higher resolution than the traditional camera and it helps the user to identify the person & objects easily

Note: It also depends upon the speed of the internet connection

  • Advanced feature: These cameras are equipped with advanced features like night vision, motion detection, facial recognition, two-way audio, and many more.
  • Onboard Storage: Support SD card for inbuilt storage if network is disconnected

As we came to know about the features, let us know about the different types depending upon the application for user.

Here are some of the most common types of IP cameras:

  • Bullet cameras: Bullet cameras are the popular choice for outdoor surveillance. They are typically weatherproof and resistant to vandalism. Used for Open to sky installations and where distance coverage is more important specifically for Outdoor areas.
  • PTZ cameras: PTZ cameras can pan, tilt, and zoom remotely by the user, which makes it ideal for monitoring large areas such as city junctions, Factory campus, high rise towers etc.
  • Dome cameras: Dome cameras are a good choice for indoor surveillance. They are discreet and can be mounted on the ceiling or wall. Specially used for wide angle coverage & with inbuilt mic support for some models
  • Wireless cameras: Wireless cameras run on a powered battery it can be used where there is no wired network infrastructure. They are easy to install and can be moved around as per one’s need.

While choosing an IP camera, there are a few factors one should consider:

  • Resolution: The image quality is very important when you look from the security perspective.
  • Features: Consider the features that are important for you, such as human detection, facial recognition, night vision, two-way audio, and many more.
  • Installation: Considering the location on installation & the type of camera.
  • Cost: IP cameras can range in price depending upon the feature and the model you are looking for

After deciding on an IP camera, you must install and configure it. Depending on the kind of camera you have selected for the installation. Once the camera is mounted, you must set it up according to your surveillance requirements. This could entail establishing access controls, recording schedules, and human detection.

To install an IP camera on a DVR, you will need the following:

  • An IP camera
  • Mounting Bracket for the camera
  • HDD for DVR or NVR for storage
  • A DVR that supports the cameras

Once you have gathered all the above equipment, follow these steps:

1. Connect the camera to the network using the network cable.

2. Then connect the camera to a power source.

3. Find the IP address of your camera which is mentioned on the box. You can also do this by logging into your router and skimming for the IP address of the device that is connected to the network.

4. Enter the IP address of the camera into the DVR.

5. Follow the instructions on the DVR to add the camera to the system.

Once you have added your camera to the DVR, you should be able to see the live feed from the camera on the DVR’s display.
