Thank you for this, Srinath.

Lots of great suggestions here. I especially like the idea of having a mechanism/place where editors can come together, to share information.

There are several reasons I like this idea:

  1. I am new to editing, and sometimes have minor questions I’d rather not burden the Zen Desk with. It would be great to have a quick (maybe messageboard-y?) way to ask for help.
  2. I sometimes receive work in genres I don’t publish. I usually just gesture vaguely in the direction of Coffeelicious, and that’s the end of it. I do wish there was a better, more efficient way to do this; to get good writing in front of the right editors.
  3. The practice of writers hopping from one publication to the next doesn’t bother me that much. I mean, the writers will do what they’re going to do. We’re here to help them get their work out there, to support them. But I do wish there was more transparency amongst editors; more acts of grace and kindness. For instance, let me say this: if you (not you specifically Srinath, but everyone) see something you want on The Lighthouse (that’s the pub I edit), reach out to me. Chances are pretty good (OK, 100%) that you’ll have my blessings, and together we can start the process of approaching the writer, removing from one pub and placing in another, re-editing. Whatever the case may be. I’m looking for a conversation. A: ‘hey friend, this is what I’m thinking and why.’ If we can promise each other that much, I think it will improve not only the quality of our publications, but the quality of our editorial experience on Medium. My two cents.

In solidarity,

Hilal
