On November 2020, Toynews-online.biz reported that Silvergate Media, the company behind the Hilda animated series, announced that it had plans to partner with various retail and and toy companies to push out Hilda merchandise following season 2's release.
While we did see a (admittedly lackluster) line of merchandise from American retail-chain Hot Topic in the USA,
A merchandise line from UK store Forbidden Planet, which has a lot more variety of merchandise not available anywhere else… (Seriously, why can’t we get this stuff in America?)
And a plush and toy line from Canadian-owned manufacturing company GUND.
But one question is still remaining, what about that Hilda board game that was supposed to come out this summer?
According to the Toynews article, Spin Master was “readying the first-ever Hilda board game, scheduled to hit retail from next summer”. Come next summer, and now we’re In September, and still no Hilda board game in sight, and very little details in sight. The fact that an official Hilda board game exists, its supposedly release date of “next summer”, and that it’s being made by Spin Master is all the information we currently know about this upcoming Hilda board game.
The idea of Hilda receiving a board game is nothing new. A Hilda exhibit at New York Comic Con 2018 showcased concepts of a Hilda board game created by a New York board game studio Brooklyn Game Lab. The concepts shows a dungeons and dragons-like game that features a cast of Hilda characters like Hilda, Frida, David, etc.
It’s unclear how this specific one would be played, but this proves that the idea of a Hilda board game has been in the works for quite some time now, and with Spin Master under control for a new one, we hope we can see some new details in regards to it soon.
Will this new Hilda board game be similar to the Brooklyn Game Lab Studios concept? Or will it be something entirely different, like a card game or heck, Operation but instead of doing surgery with a random fat guy, you’re pulling out the insides of Erik Ahlberg?
And more importantly, how am I going to convince my real-life friends to play a board game based on a show for kids with me? I’m really hoping at least some people in my high school like Hilda.
