One of my husband’s last wishes was to vote for Hillary Clinton

Liz’s husband had never wanted to vote in an election—until he thought Hillary might run.

“My husband and I were both active duty Air Force during the Vietnam War. We met in technical school, and he proposed to me after three days. It was an unusual situation—we knew each other for three days before we were engaged, and four days later I shipped out to my first active duty assignment. We stayed in touch, of course, and got married when we came back home for Christmas.

“When my husband and I got married, he had never voted. I never could get him out to the polls. He always thought that his one vote wouldn’t make a difference. I’ve voted in every election since I was 18, and I’ve been a big Hillary fan from the very beginning. One day we were watching TV, and he says, ‘You know, if Hillary ever runs for President, I’m gonna vote for her.’

“When my husband and I got married, he had never voted. I never could get him out to vote. He always thought that his one vote wouldn’t make a difference.”

“I was really surprised because he was never as involved in our community and politics as I was. He thought it took time away from each other and from our family. It was lovely but surprising to find out how highly he thought of her. I said, ‘You’ve never voted a day in your life. We’ve been married for 43 years and you’ve never once voted!’ And he replied ‘Well she’s has so much experience and is more than qualified for the job—I’ll vote if she runs.’

“My husband passed away in March. He had Agent Orange poisoning from Vietnam, and it was hard. I’m volunteering for Hillary’s campaign in his memory. If he was here, he would be right here in this field office with me. He was like a salesman, he could talk you into anything– I think he would’ve changed a lot of minds about this election. To me, it was one of his last wishes—that she would run for President and he would vote for her. So I’m doing all that I can to make that final request come true for him. I’m here for my husband.”
