Voters across the Granite State are heading to the polls a week from Tuesday, on November 8, to cast their ballots. But what if you’re a UNH student from out of state or out of town?

The answer is yes, you can vote — as long as you are a U.S. citizen aged 18 or older (and are not voting anywhere else, obviously).

Here’s what you need to know:

First — Commit to vote.
Make a plan. Figure out the best time to vote. Is it first thing in the morning after you roll out of bed? In between classes? Before you head into a study session at Diamond? Set yourself a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget.

WHEN TO VOTE: Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but be sure to leave yourself a good 45 to 60 minutes to get to the polling place, register to vote, cast your ballot, and get back.

WHERE TO VOTE: If you live on campus, you’ll vote at Oyster River High School at 55 Coe Drive in Durham. It’s over a mile from campus, but shuttles will pick up every 10 minutes from the MUB circle from 7:00am until the polls close. If you live off campus, find out your polling place at iwillvote.com/nh.

Make sure you have the right forms of identification
Even if you travel home for breaks, you can still vote in New Hampshire if you attend UNH. You can register to vote on Election Day itself.

You will need:

  1. A document to establish your identity, age, and citizenship. This can be a government issued ID such as driver’s license (from any state) or a passport.
  2. A document with a local address to establish that you live in New Hampshire. This can be school paperwork showing your local address, a bank statement, paycheck stub, or your student directory entry if it shows your on-campus address.

Figure out who you’re voting for:
✓ Hillary Clinton for President
✓ Maggie Hassan for U.S. Senate
✓ Carol Shea-Porter for Congress
✓ Colin Van Ostern for Governor

Finally: Bring a friend
You’ve made the commitment, you’ve got your IDs, you know who you’ll cast your ballot for. Now, make sure your friends, neighbors, and classmates know that they too can vote. Even better — bring them along with you!
