This seven-year-old changed her name for Hillary.

Meet Lilly, a 7-year-old who announced to her family at dinner she wanted to change her name to “Lillary.” Why? Because she was so inspired by Hillary Clinton.

Afterwards, her mom wrote to Hillary about Lillary — and a few weeks ago, the family received a special letter from Hillary herself!

We caught up with Lillary and her mom to hear more about Hillary’s response and what it has meant to them.

“Kids say amazing things, and sometimes they have less filters than we do. There is a kind of truth to what children say. When Lilly was at the dinner table and said to me, ‘I want to change my name to Lillary.’ I understood she had someone in mind and was thinking, ‘This is a woman who is changing the world, and I want to be a woman who does things too.’

The idea that part of her identity is about what she wants to do in life and the effect she wants to have on people — that really came through to me. Lilly has been very excited about Hillary and about having a woman president.

Seeing her excitement about combining her name with Hillary was incredible. It was so sweet. You could tell it was something that was really touching to her and I wanted to make sure the campaign knew. Even if it just makes one person smile it would have been worth sharing.

I opened up my mailbox and almost didn’t notice the letter at first — and then I saw the red arrow. I thought to myself, ‘What is this? Why is this political mail addressed to my daughter?’ I decided to read the letter before her just in case it was a mistake and asking for a donation, even though Lilly has already said she wants to give some of her allowance to Hillary.

I opened up the letter, scanned quickly, and saw the name ‘Lillary’ in the copy. I yelled to my son, ‘Max! Get in the car! Lilly got a letter from Hillary!’ and we were off to go pick her up from school. Max was just bursting, he wanted to tell her. When Lilly finally got the letter a few minutes later, you could tell the words meant a lot to her.

The words are so inspirational and empowering to us and to girls. That’s something we need more in the world. We’re encouraging girls to use their voices and to be strong — it’s a big deal. It’s a real change in our culture and there are pockets where that’s still not welcome.

For her to have that message from Hillary Clinton? That’s really exciting and inspirational for her.

Hillary has worked her entire adult life for the voices of children and women. We need to make sure we’re doing right by our little girls and boys. Our family isn’t supporting Hillary just because she’s a woman, but she’s a woman that has our best interests in mind.

It’s tricky as a parent, you want the best for your child. You want to lead them into the best world. We didn’t release this letter to make her famous.

We wanted to remind us all of our common humanity. And the importance of kind words for our children and to each other.”

Hey Lilly, how do you feel that Hillary reached out to you personally?

Lilly: Happy.

What was the first thing that came to mind when your mom told you that Hillary wrote you a letter?

Lilly: Excited, second was happy, third was emotional happy tears.
