A Winning Weekend
We had a great, winning weekend. First, on Friday Dr. Abdalla Darwish in physics was named the HBCU Male Faculty Member of the Year by HBCU Digest. This is a great honor to follow up our national story on physics. Dr. Darwish is traveling in Italy lecturing so I had to accept on his behalf.
A list of all recipients can be found here. Of course, I am competitive and I believe we should have won a few more (especially coach of the year- football school bias!) And I was surprised we didn’t make it as a finalist for HBCU of the year, but I’ll do a wrap of our year soon. But we generally win at least one a year and some schools have not won at all in the 7 years of the program. Shout out to Jarrett Carter who created this awards program- awesome idea!

While we didn’t win as much in DC, the good thing about us is that we win in all kinds of arenas. On Saturday, our Alpha Phi Alpha chapter won 2 awards at the national convention in Baltimore- highest GPA (that means of EVERY Alpha chapter in the world), and winners of the College Brothers Quiz Bowl competition.
They really had a great year, including having brothers as SGA president, SGA vice president, Mr. Dillard, Junior Class gentleman, and a Sutton best all around student winner.
Finally, congrats to recent alum Edward Buckles ’15 who won the Millennial Award for film on Saturday. The New Orleans Millennial Awards honors dynamic young professionals who contribute to the community through public service, make significant strides in business sectors, or serve as cultural ambassadors.
Edward recently got a shout out from Lil Wayne based on an event he hosted tied to his documentary, “Katrina Babies.” You can read about it here.

This is a great way to ramp up the year. Congrats to all.
