The Oregon Trail
I would first like to announce my love for the ol’ black and green Oregon Trail game — it’s the bees knees yo. Having to do with nothing in regards to the game, I hope, I’m making a life change. I’m not doing this alone, my best friend is coming with me. Given that she is my wife, it was a mutual decision that we have made.
Destination! Portland — err I mean Beaverton, Oregon. It started out as a Ten year plan, then two….then two month plan, now it’s only three weeks away. The fear is as prevalent as the excitement! Leaving family will be the hardest thing about this move, my father will no longer be just 3 hours away. At the same time, a new bounty of like minded individuals will be on the horizon. While living in Pennsylvania is hardly similar to living in the south, it’s still fairly conservative. While this isn’t a problem in theory, in this weird era of Trumpism, it has become a problem. People have become cold and off putting, you’re forced to pick and choose who you can talk to; given they choose to even respond.
The Poconos is supposed to be this cool place to vacation, while that may be true, living there is completely different. Every day you are bombarded by NY and NJ ‘folk’ who give two poos about your car, environment, emotions. After 5 years of this, something needs to change. (Insert BIG CHANGE here). I should make it clear that neither my wife or I have ever visited Oregon, we have not seen in person the apartment we are leasing. We are being self ambushed by change we have no clue about, this is exciting. Only YouTube and friends have provided insight into life out there, maybe some Portlandia too.
Fitting in shouldn’t be a problem, I’m an environmentalist who believes in universal healthcare…right? I suppose I kinda dislike Californians too — like stop spending all your time on the beach with a peroxide bottle. This may be jealousy talking, I refuse to admit anything.
I don’t necessarily expect this to be read by anyone, I’m not a writer, I’m a scientist. If you did make it this far though, leave me a comment, let me know your thoughts about both my awful skills in the writing department and the move to the West Coast. I should also note that I don’t proof read these, I like seeing the mistakes later. “What was I thinking when I typed that?”
Thanks all, hopefully dysentery will not be a factor in this trip :)
