Annabel Karmel: In the Spotlight

Each month we’ll be putting one of our clients under the spotlight. This month it’s the turn of Annabel Karmel and her recipe apps.
Who Is Annabel?
Annabel Karmel is a food specialist with two incredibly useful recipe apps (Family Cooking and the Essential Guide to Feeding Your Baby and Toddler) that are both easy to use and simply stunning to look at.
The apps include helpful meal planners, mouthwatering recipes, engaging video content, and a whole host of tips from food guru Annabel.
How Did It Start?
Annabel launched the Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner over 20 years ago, before going on to write over 40 books that cover each and every stage of a child’s development.
She is credited with revolutionising the way in which babies and young children eat, and her popular recipes have spawned their own successful supermarket food range.
It’s fair to say she knows her stuff! So it’s no surprise that her smartphone apps, built by HIROLA, have become favourites of families across the globe.
Celebrating Success
As you can imagine, for someone who has been at the top of their industry for over a quarter of a century, Annabel has seen her fair share of success.
As part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2006, she was awarded an MBE for her hard and important work in the field of child nutrition.
Just three years later, she won the prestigious Caterer & Hotelkeeper Excellence in Food Award for her children’s meals. She scooped the Mother and Baby Magazine’s Lifetime Achievement Award that year too.
And in 2010, Annabel was again a winner, this time at the First Women Awards, set up to recognise women at the top of their professions, and who are leading the way for the next generation.
Where her apps are concerned, they are both live on the App Store, and are consistently ranked among the very top food apps available to download. In fact, more often than not, you’ll find them occupying the top spot.
How Did HIROLA Help?
When Annabel and her team came to us, they were looking for a partner who had the expertise to develop and deliver a cutting-edge smartphone application. It had to be something that would stand apart in a crowded market, all while serving the needs of her loyal audience.
The busy mums relying on Annabel’s advice and guidance needed a quick and easy way to access information, inspiration, resources, and tools.
When the time came to develop the apps, we had to ensure the imagery remained the focal point of the project. The beautiful food shots, fun and vibrant colours, and the modern legible typeface all combined to produce a fresh and exciting design.
Both apps were then built using Objective C, a programming language required for the development of native iOS apps.
Upon completion of the project, Head of Marketing & PR for Annabel Karmel, Sarah Louise Smith, had this to say about HIROLA:
“With the mobile app world moving at such a fast pace, we also needed a team of mobile app experts who lived & breathed the latest trends, best practices and operating systems. HIROLA certainly matched all of our criteria.”
