Chapter 6, question 20

A-

Two are left dead and two are injured after a car ran through a red light and collided with another Monday evening.

James West, 43, was ticketed for careless and imprudent driving, but the prosecuting attorney said he would investigate before determining whether or not involuntary manslaughter charges would be brought against him.

At about 4:30 p.m. Monday, Springfield police were called to the corner of Ninth and Elm streets to investigate a two-car accident. They called an ambulance upon arrival, because two people had been injured.

Witnesses told police that the car in which the two victims were riding was hit broadside by another car and rolled over three times, finally coming to rest against a light pole. The other car was heading south on Ninth Street and ran a red light.

West and Samuel Blackwater, 32, both employees in the Parks and Recreation Department, were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. West suffered a broken leg and possible concussion. Blackwater had two broken arms and a broken nose.

The two victims were identified as James Westhaver, 55, the president of the Merchants National Bank, the largest bank in Springfield. A bank official said Westhaver had been employed at the bank for 33 years. His wife, Martha, 60, was also killed in the crash.

Martha Westhaver hosted a talk show on KTGG, a local television station. James Westhaver was chairman of the United Way this year, and treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce.

Funeral arrangements for the Westhavers are incomplete.
