Proposal for Ham Council

A DAO is, by definition, a decentralized organisation made by and for a community with a common goal. As much as founding the DAO is talked about in a technical sense, we already have a ‘DAO’. It’s our discord and the people who chose to get on most days and chat to fellow hamster JPG lovers. We organise ourselves and come up with solutions and ‘vote’ through our participation in these discussions.

The community has recently put up a vote on how we… vote! So if you want to have your say you’ll find it in the DAO general chat.

I proposed in my last article the need for a ‘HamCouncil’. A body of elected community members who can help guide the broader community and streamline decision making. Creating a formalised DAO that can access and allocate funds in a decentralized manner is no small accomplishment. I’m sure many of you have been eagerly awaiting developments from the DAO and are looking forward to voting with your hammies. However, the systems, requirements and mechanisms involved with a full-fledged DAO have to come from somewhere! If all decisions from the get-go have to be voted on we may be here a while before any meaningful tasks can be started.

It’s for these reasons I’d like to set out a formalised system for establishing the HamCouncil, its functions, the requirements for application and how to apply.

Functions

The HamCouncil will be the catalyst for the founding of the DAO. Its functions should be far-reaching. However, the decisions must also be transparent and have community oversight. All decisions impacting the trajectory of the project or that could affect the community significantly would still be voted on.

The council should be staffed by suitable applicants who have previous experience in a role similar to the one they’re applying for. If no community member is experienced in a given role, or a role receives no applications, we could open the position to people outside the community.

For now, the council roles I propose to get this DAO up and running are:

  • Community manager: A representative to manage the community engagement for the project. Think social media, alerts, collabs, setting up exposure opportunities (AMAs etc.)
  • Project manager: A representative to handle ongoing projects within the DAO; from oversight of internal development to making sure features and utility relating to the DAO are delivered as voted for.
  • Development manager: A representative to head up the developer team and manage the development of smart contract based operations of the DAO. Solidity is a must, other languages are a plus. (That rhymes :D)
  • Growth manager: A representative familiar with DAO technologies and crypto developments that would allow the DAO to persuade up and coming technologies, opportunities etc.
  • Treasury manager: A representative to oversee the DAOs funds to ensure funds are allocated as planned and report on earnings, use and accounting of DAO spendings/income.

There will also be some role agnostic functions of the HamCouncil, Such as:

  • Approval of community submitted proposals.
  • Multi-Sig approval of the DAOs wallet/s (maybe not to begin with)
  • Liaise with the HamsteTeam

The functions listed here are more of a guideline and not an all-inclusive job listing. Roles/functions can be added or removed as the community sees fit or as the DAO grows into new areas.

Due to the demanding nature of the roles above, compensation would need to be given at some point. For now, the roles will be unpaid as paying full price for these roles could quickly bankrupt the treasury.

As members continue to fulfil their roles and the DAO grows as a result. Compensation would fit with the industry standards across DAOs so we can have members working full time for the community.

Requirements for entry

Experience is a must as the team will be small, to begin with, and will need suitable representatives to fill the roles.

All applicants must be a verified VoterHam currently holding a hamster. I think it’s important for the council members to have some skin in the game!

Applicants must be 18+

The roles listed above carry a lot of weight and responsibility. That’s why it’s my opinion that applicants should include an introduction to who they are, a bit of their background and what makes them the ideal fit for their preferred role. Note: I don’t think it is necessary to dox yourself to the community but just general info would be fine.

I think with these requirements voters can make informed decisions on who will best represent all of us as we take this next big step! There is a lot of money on the line with this DAO and we should take precautions accordingly.

How to apply

Provided the proposal is accepted by the voterhams, I’ll make a channel where applicants can submit their applications and people can vote for their favourite community members for the roles!

I could write up a template if some people are finding it difficult to come up with one :D.

Final thoughts

I just wanted to leave all my fellow hammie holders with a few thoughts! The ideas put forward here are simply an elaboration of the idea from my first article. By no means are they what needs to happen going forward. We’re community-driven and feedback for changes on this proposal would be awesome.

I’d like to say a truly heartfelt thank you to those who read my previous post and said nice things or went as far as to post them on Twitter!!! THANK YOU. It means a lot especially from members of this inspiring community.

As always keep it real and SQUEAK SQUEAK.
