Who has Won the Triple Crown?

Justify will attempt to become the 13th Triple Crown winner in history when he goes to the gate in the 2018 Belmont Stakes. The race is known as the “Test of the Champion”, and many horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes only to come up short in the Belmont Stakes.
Only four Belmont favorites have won the race in the last 25 years, so the odds appear to be against Justify, who will be less than even money to win the Belmont and complete racing history by capturing the Triple Crown.
Here are the 12 Triple Crown winners that are forever part of horse racing history.
2015 — American Pharoah
1978 — Affirmed
1977 — Seattle Slew
1973 — Secretariat
1948 — Citation
1946 — Assault
1943 — Count Fleet
1941 — Whirlaway
1937 — War Admiral
1935 — Omaha
1930 — Gallant Fox
1919 — Sir Barton
There have some great champions that won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes only come up short in the Belmont Stakes.
A total of 23 horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown but failed to win the Belmont. California Chrome (2014) was the most recent when he finished 4th, and many of those 23 Triple Crown hopefuls finished top-4 in the Belmont and eight finished 2nd including Smarty Jones (2004), Real Quite (1998 by a nose), Silver Charm (1997), Sunday Silence (1989), Majestic Prince (1969), Forward Pass (1968), Tim Tam (1958) and Pensive (1944).
